SATAN'S PERSONATION OF CHRIST
- WHEN AND HOW?
The event that will enrapture the whole world will take place and is mentioned numerous times in the writings of Ellen G White - a servant of the most high God. The question is WHERE is this event recorded in scripture and HOW does it happen? This is the event that Satan uses to seal his satanic plans for world domination and to receive the direct worship and adoration he has longed for. To truly be recognised as 'GOD'.
This study outlines the evidence gathered from Ellen White and scripture is used to reinforce and confirm Satan's intentions to come as the saviour of this world and deceive the nations and if possible the very elect (Matthew 24:24).
Satan's plan to secure this world as his kingdom has been put into action ever since sin entered the universe. His plan of action for the last days is aptly described by Ellen White:
"All the vast, complicated machinery of evil agencies is put into action in these last days. Through generation after generation, from age to age, Satan has gathered human agencies through whom to work out his diabolical purposes, and to bring about the enforcement of his plans and devices in the earth. The great putrid fountain of evil has been continually flowing through human society. Though unable to expel God from his throne, Satan has charged God with satanic attributes, and has claimed the attributes of God as his own. He is a deceiver, and through his serpentine sharpness, through his crooked practises, he has drawn to himself the homage which man should have given to God, and has planted his satanic throne between human worshiper and the divine Father". MS39, 1884
"By the decree enforcing the institution of the papacy in violation of the law of God, our nation will disconnect herself fully from righteousness. When Protestantism shall stretch her hand across the gulf to grasp the hand of the Roman power, when she shall reach over the abyss to clasp hands with Spiritualism, when, under the influence of this threefold union, our country shall repudiate every principle of its Constitution as a Protestant and Republican government, and shall make provision for the propagation of papal falsehoods and delusions, then we may know that the time has come for the marvelous working of Satan, and that the end is near."5T pg 451
The Sunday Law is a sign. When the decree or Sunday law is enacted in the USA they disconnect themselves from righteousness signifying that the time has come for the marvellous working of Satan.
"In the last days Satan will appear as an angel of light, with great power and heavenly glory, and claim to be the Lord of the whole earth. He will declare that the Sabbath has been changed from the seventh to the first day of the week; and as lord of the first day of the week he will present this spurious sabbath as a test of loyalty to him. Then will take place the final fulfillment of the Revelator’s prophecy. [Revelation 13:4-18, quoted.]" MR No. 1403 Calamities and The Great Controversy
According to the above quote Satan will appear in the last days - claiming to be the Lord of the whole earth and declare the day he is Lord of. He is Lord of the first day of the week! This is the day that people should honour and is a test of loyalty to him. Sunday, introduced by the 'man of sin', the papal power, is sanctioned by the devil himself and has his satanic blessing placed upon it. The law of the Creator God is made of none effect. The seventh day sabbath of the fourth commandment has been made void. God's true children - those that keep his commandments and have the faith of Jesus are now viewed with contempt and deemed to be trouble makers.
Though professing to be followers of the Lamb of God, men become imbued with the spirit of the dragon. They profess to be meek and humble but they speak and legislate with the spirit of Satan, showing by their actions that they are the opposite of what they profess to be. This lamb-like power unites with the dragon in making war upon those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. And Satan unites with Protestants and Papists, acting in consort with them as the God of this world, dictating to men as if they were the subjects of his kingdom, to be handled and governed and controlled as he pleases. If men will not agree to trample under foot the commandments of God, the spirit of the dragon is revealed. They are imprisoned, brought before councils, and fined. “He causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads.” “He had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.” Thus Satan usurps the prerogatives of Jehovah. The man of sin sits in the seat of God, proclaiming himself to be God, and acting above God. 14MR 162.2
The previous two paragraphs directly refer to Revelation 13. The lamb like beast unites with the dragon to make war on God's people. Satan is that dragon, who acting as the God of this world, dictates to men his expectations and how they should be carried out. The ultimate 'man of sin' proclaims himself to be God!
Does scripture support this interpretation and analysis?
Turn to Isaiah 14 and contemplate what God has revealed:
4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
5 The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.
6 He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.
7 The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.
8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
9 Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
10 All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?
11 Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
Lucifer, the fallen angel in the scripture passage above is identified specifically in three ways. He is referred to as:
1, Lucifer
2. King of Babylon
3. The MAN that made the earth to tremble.
2Co 11:14 KJV And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."
1Jn_2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
Appearing as Christ, is pivotal in gaining the trust and adoration of the whole world and in doing so Satan identifies the little group of commandment keepers, worshippers of the true God, the creator of the universe as the troublemakers. Ellen White describes this time thus:
As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will attempt to personate Christ. The church has long professed to look to the Saviour’s advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come. In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of God given by John in the Revelation. [Revelation 1:13-15.] ?..His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody. In gentle, compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has blessed. He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth. This is the strong, almost overmastering delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes, from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying, This is “the great power of God.” 4SP 442.1...But the people of God will not be misled. The teachings of this false Christ are not in accordance with the Scriptures. His blessing is pronounced upon the worshipers of the beast and his image,—the very class upon whom the Bible declares that God’s unmingled wrath shall be poured out. And, furthermore, Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of Christ’s advent. The Scriptures teach that “as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be;” [Matthew 24:27.] that he “cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him;” [Revelation 1:7.] that he will “descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God;” [1 Thessalonians 4:16.] that he will “come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him,” [Matthew 25:31.] and will “send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect.” [Matthew 24:31.] Those who have received the love of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive. By the testimony of the Scriptures they will detect the deceiver in his disguise. 4SP 443.1...To all, the testing time will come. By the sifting of temptation, the genuine Christian will be revealed. Are the people of God now so firmly established upon his word that they would not yield to the evidence of their senses? Would they, in such a crisis, cling to the Bible, and the Bible only? Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day.
"Those who honor the law of God have been accused of bringing judgments upon the world, and they will be regarded as the cause of the fearful convulsions of nature and the strife and bloodshed among men that are filling the earth with woe. The power attending the last warning has enraged the wicked; their anger is kindled against all who have received the message, and Satan will excite to still greater intensity the spirit of hatred and persecution." GC88 614.3
The extract above is from 'The Time of Trouble' chapter in Volume Four of the Spirit of Prophecy which is later used to formulate the book 'The Great Controversy. Do we assume then that everything discussed in that chapter is happening after the close of probation - during the great tribulation (Matthew 24:21)? No! We have to read carefully the context of what is written to be able to conclude the correct timing of events. Events are not necessarily recorded in chronological order within Ellen White's writings. The context of the writing must be the determining factor.
In the previous quotation we have :As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will attempt to personate Christ. Let us note that the personation of Christ is 'the crowning act of DECEPTION'.
This is the strong, almost overmastering delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes, from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying, This is “the great power of God.” 4SP 442.1...But the people of God will not be misled. The teachings of this false Christ are not in accordance with the Scriptures. Note that Satan's personation of Christ is described as : the strong, almost overmastering delusion and the multitudes from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries. The response of God's people is totally different and they will not be misled.
This time being discussed outlines the crowning act of Satan's deception and the majority of the worlds inhabitants will be deceived. Gods people, however, totally relying on the word of God, are able to detect the deceiver and are not deceived
The very next paragraph continues and states: To all, the testing time will come. By the sifting of temptation, the genuine Christian will be revealed. Are the people of God now so firmly established upon his word that they would not yield to the evidence of their senses? The timing of Satan's personation of Christ is in the TESTING TIME thus revealing that the time being discussed is prior to the close of probation. Just because this written account is in 'The Time of Trouble' chapter does not mean that everything written in the chapter is during that time. Ellen White is providing essential information for her readers so they understand why Satan in the 'Time of Trouble' lobbies for a death decree against all sabbath keepers.
Please be super careful that when reading Ellen White's writings that you don't jump to conclusions about the chronology of prophetic events. The context is paramount and will determine the events timing. The word of God will verify that timing. Using chapter headings and section headings to determine the chronology of events can be just as flawed a technique. A lot of Ellen White's writings are compilations and the headings were not of her creation or inspiration. One example of this is a heading found in the compilation 'The Truth About Angels' which states:
Satan’s Personation After the Close of Probation
This compilation was published in 1996 and is clearly an example of why we need to be super vigilant when coming to conclusions about prophetic timing of events using Ellen White's writings. This heading is overwhelmingly WRONG!
Getting back to what is happening to God's witnesses during the time of the Sunday law we find:
"As the Sabbath has become the special point of controversy throughout Christendom, and religious and secular authorities have combined to enforce the observance of the Sunday, the persistent refusal of a small minority to yield to the popular demand, will make them objects of universal execration. It will be urged that the few who stand in opposition to an institution of the church and a law of the State, ought not to be tolerated; that it is better for them to suffer than for whole nations to be thrown into confusion and lawlessness. The same argument eighteen hundred years ago was brought against Christ by the “rulers of the people.” “It is expedient for us,” said the wily Caiaphas, “that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.” [John 11:50.] This argument will appear conclusive; and a decree will finally be issued against those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, denouncing them as deserving of the severest punishment, and giving the people liberty, after a certain time, to put them to death. Romanism in the Old World, and apostate Protestantism in the New, will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts. GC88 615.1
The people of God will then be plunged into those scenes of affliction and distress described by the prophet as the time of Jacob’s trouble. “Thus saith the Lord: We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.” “All faces are turned into paleness. Alas! for that day is great so that none is like it; it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.” [Jeremiah 30:5-7.] GC88 616.1
The Great Controversy (88) version includes the statement that pinpoints when God's people enter the Time of Jacob's Trouble - when the death decree becomes a reality. Satan has enraged the world against God's precious, commandment keeping, people. The power of their message has kindled the world's anger. Satan blames them for the "fearful convulsions of nature and strife" and rallies the church and state to issue a death decree. War is declared upon God's witnesses -
*[[Rev 11:7]] KJV* And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
*[[Rev 13:7]] KJV* And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
*[[Dan 12:7]] KJV* And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.
This war on God's witnesses is declared after their testimony is ended. The death decree is certainly part of the war effort to destroy God's commandment keeping people.
When Jesus leaves the most holy, His restraining Spirit is withdrawn from rulers and people. They are left to the control of evil angels. Then such laws will be made by the counsel and direction of Satan, that unless time should be very short, no flesh could be saved. Mar 268.2
I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus’ work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues. These plagues enraged the wicked against the righteous; they thought that we had brought the judgments of God upon them, and that if they could rid the earth of us, the plagues would then be stayed. A decree went forth to slay the saints, which caused them to cry day and night for deliverance. This was the time of Jacob’s trouble. Mar 268.3
When the death decree is issued against the saints, they, and the worlds inhabitants are plunged into the time of trouble. Christ's intercession in the sanctuary has ended and he has taken off his priestly garments and put on the garments of vengeance. The four winds restrained by God's angels are let loose. The vials containing the plagues will be poured out. Forces are set in motion that will precipitate in the second coming of Christ to redeem his saints.
"The substitution of the laws of men for the law of God, the exaltation, by merely human authority, of Sunday in place of the Bible Sabbath, is the last act in the drama. When this substitution becomes universal, God will reveal Himself. He will arise in His majesty to shake terribly the earth. He will come out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the world for their iniquity, and the earth shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain."7TM pg 141
Another time perspective can be gathered from the above statement. The time of trouble will begin when the substitution of Sunday - Satan's day in the place of the Bible sabbath becomes UNIVERSAL.
"Long has Satan been preparing for his final effort to deceive the world. The foundation of his work was laid by the assurance given to Eve in Eden, “Ye shall not surely die.” “In the day that ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.” Little by little he has prepared the way for his master-piece of deception in the development of Spiritualism. He has not yet reached the full accomplishment of his designs; but it will be reached in the last remnant of time, and the world will be swept into the ranks of this delusion. They are fast being lulled into a fatal security, to be awakened only by the outpouring of the wrath of God." 4SP 379.1
*[[1Th 5:3]] KJV* For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
"Fallen angels upon earth form confederations with evil men. In this age antichrist will appear as the true Christ, and then the law of God will be fully made void in the nations of our world. Rebellion against God’s holy law will be fully ripe. But the true leader of all this rebellion is Satan, clothed as an angel of light. Men will be deceived and will exalt him to the place of God, and deify him."—The Review and Herald, September 12, 1893.
It will be in the last remnant of time that Satan will sweep the world into the master-piece of deception. He will come personating Christ and under this over powering delusion those who have worshipped the beast and his image are awakened by the outpouring of the wrath of God. The wrath of God is poured out when the time of Jacob's trouble begins. This is also when the law of God is fully made void. *[[Psa 119:126]] KJV* It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law. Clearly the last remnant of time in which Satan appears is the last remnant of probationary time. He will try, if possible to deceive the very elect but in doing so will sweep the world into the ranks of this delusion. Satan's efforts to deceive are completed just prior to the close of probation. It is after Satan's penultimate appearance as Christ that God's wrath is poured out.

[Revelation 1:13-15.] The glory that surrounds him is unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph rings out upon the air, “Christ has come! Christ has come!” The people prostrate themselves in adoration before him, while he lifts up his hands, and pronounces a blessing upon them, as Christ blessed his disciples when he was personally upon the earth. His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody. In gentle, compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has blessed. He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth. This is the strong, almost overmastering delusion." 4SP 442
Satan's appearance as Christ is the crowning act in the great drama of deception and is the strong, almost overmastering delusion. It is interesting to note that he declares that those keeping the seventh day are blaspheming his name by refusing to listen to HIS ANGELS SENT TO THEM WITH LIGHT AND TRUTH. This is an important element of the strong, almost overmastering delusion that needs consideration.
"Those who would stand in this time of peril must understand the testimony of the Scriptures concerning the nature of man and the state of the dead; for in the near future many will be confronted bythe spirits of devils personating beloved relatives or friends, and declaring the most dangerous heresies. These visitants will appeal to our tenderest sympathies, and will work miracles to sustain their pretensions. We must be prepared to withstand them with the Bible truth that the dead know not anything, and that they who thus appear are the spirits of devils." 4SP 377.1
"Just before us is the “hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.” [Revelation 3:10.] All whose faith is not firmly established upon the word of God will be deceived and overcome. But to those who earnestly seek a knowledge of the truth, thus doing what they can to prepare for the conflict, the God of truth will be a sure defense. “Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee,” is the Saviour’s promise. He would sooner send every angel out of Heaven to protect his people, than leave one soul that trusts in him to be overcome by Satan." 4SP 377.2
Ellen White states that beloved friends and relatives will be personated by the spirits of devils. Spiritualism at this time has reached over the abyss and clasped the hands of Romanism and Protestantism. and the time has come for the marvellous working for Satan. This time is also referred to as "The Hour of Temptation". The word of God, upon which the faith of God's witnesses is based, is the sword of the spirit. Jesus also experienced direct temptation assaults from the devil but he overcame by the word of God. (Matthew 4: 1-11). The witnesses of God are admonished to :
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
It will certainly be an 'evil day', but those wearing the armour of God will be prepared and enabled to withstand the spirits of devils
"As the ministration of Jesus closed in the holy place, and He passed into the holiest, and stood before the ark containing the law of God, He sent another mighty angel with a third message to the world. A parchment was placed in the angel’s hand, and as he descended to the earth in power and majesty, he proclaimed a fearful warning, with the most terrible threatening ever borne to man. This message was designed to put the children of God upon their guard, by showing them the hour of temptation andanguish that was before them. Said the angel, “They will be brought into close combat with the beast and his image. Their only hope of eternal life is to remain steadfast. Although their lives are at stake, they must hold fast the truth.” The third angel closes his message thus: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” EW 254.1
The third angel's message has been proclaimed since 1844 when Christ' ministration in the sanctuary in heaven moved into the 'Most Holy' apartment or the 'Day of Atonement' phase. When the 'hour of temptation' arrives God's witnesses will truly "be brought into close combat with the beast and his image."
"Moreover, the apostles, as personated by these lying spirits, are made to contradict what they wrote at the dictation of the Holy Spirit when on earth. They deny the divine origin of the Bible, and thus tear away the foundation of the Christian’s hope, and put out the light that reveals the way to Heaven." 4SP 375.1
"Satan is making the world believe that the Bible is a mere fiction, or at least a book suited to the infancy of the race, but now to be lightly regarded, or cast aside as obsolete. And to take the place of the word of God he holds out spiritual manifestations. Here is a channel wholly under his control; by this means he can make the world believe what he will. The book that is to judge him and his followers he puts into the shade, just where he wants it; the Saviour of the world he makes to be no more than a common man. And as the Romish guard that watched the tomb of Jesus spread the lying report which the priests and elders put into their mouths to disprove his resurrection, so do the believers in spiritual manifestations try to make it appear that there is nothing miraculous in the circumstances of our Saviour’s life. After thus seeking to put Jesus in the background, they call attention to their own miracles, declaring that these far exceed the works of Christ."4SP 375.2
*[[2Co 11:13]] KJV* For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
*[[2Co 11:14]] KJV* And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
*[[2Co 11:15]] KJV* Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
The word of God accurately captures what will be happening at this time of earth's history. Not only is Satan transformed into an angel of light, his ministers (evil spirits) are transformed as ministers of righteousness and apostles that on the outside who appear to be Christ's are actually Satan's.
"Their loved ones will appear in robes of light, as familiar to the sight as when they were upon the earth. They will teach them and converse with them. And many will be deceived by this wonderful display of Satan’s power. The only safety for the people of God is to be thoroughly conversant with their Bibles, and be intelligent upon the reasons of our faith in regard to the sleep of the dead." RH April 1, 1875
Notice in the above paragraph what the loved ones are wearing - "robes of light". Outward appearances are going to be very deceptive. Christ knew this when he warned his disciples about end time events in Matthew 24. Right at the beginning of the discourse he states:
*[[Mat 24:4]] KJV* And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
*[[Mat 24:5]] KJV* For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Christ looks into the future and stresses right at the beginning of his response to their question: *[[Mat 24:3]] KJV* Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? Take heed that no man deceive you. This deception was vital for us to understand - it was so important that Christ stressed the same point in more detail later on in the chapter:
*[[Mat 24:23]] KJV* Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. *[[Mat 24:24]] KJV* For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. *[[Mat 24:25]] KJV* Behold, I have told you before.
Christ then details in the next verse: *[[Mat 24:26]] KJV* Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. Knowledge of God's word is paramount and in that time you will have to deny your senses and the emotional appeals made to you and totally rely on the Word of God.
"Satan is a cunning foe. And it is not difficult for the evil angels to represent both saints and sinners who have died, and make these representations visible to human eyes. These manifestations will be more frequent, and developments of a more startling character will appear as we near the close of time. We need not be astonished at anything in the line of deceptions to allure the unwary and deceive, if possible, the very elect. Spiritualists quote, “Prove all things.” But God has, for the benefit of His people who live amid the perils of the last days, proved this class, and given the result of His proving." RH April 1, 1875"Satan is a diligent Bible student. He knows that his time is short, and he seeks at every point to counterwork the work of the Lord upon this earth. It is impossible to give any idea of the experience of the people of God who shall be alive upon the earth when celestial glory and a repetition of the persecutions of the past are blended. They will walk in the light proceeding from the throne of God. By means of the angels there will be constant communication between heaven and earth. And Satan, surrounded by evil angels, and claiming to be God, will work miracles of all kinds, to deceive, if possible, the very elect." 1NL 50.4
At the time when celestial glory and a repetition of the persecutions of the past are blended, God's witnesses will be giving their testimony against Satan and his evil angels who have been accepted by the majority of the world's inhabitants as Christ and his ministering spirits. "As the second appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ draws near, satanic agencies are moved from beneath. Satan will not only appear as a human being, but he will personate Jesus Christ, and the world that has rejected the truth will receive him as the Lord of lords and King of kings." —The S.D.A. Satan's appearance as Christ is designed to deceive if possible the very elect.
The article below has recently been released by the E. G. White estate online and confirms the timing of Satan's appearance as Christ, just prior to the close of probation.
Satan’s Last Deception
Satan sees that he is about to lose his case. He cannot close in the whole world. He makes one more, last, desperate effort to overcome the faithful by deception. He does this in personating Christ. He clothes himself with the garments of royalty which have been accurately described in the vision of John. He has power to do this. He will appear to his deluded followers, the Christian world who received not the love of the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness (transgression of the law), as Christ coming the second time. He proclaims himself Christ, and he is believed to be Christ, a beautiful, majestic being clothed with majesty and, with soft voice with pleasant words, with glory unsurpassed by anything their mortal eyes had yet beheld. These, his deceived, deluded followers, set up a shout of victory, “Christ has come the second time! Christ has come! He has lifted up His hands just as He did when He was upon the earth, and blessed us.”Ms16-1884 1.1600
Here it was [that] the masterly effort of Satan would have deceived the very elect. But who were the ones blessed by him? Whom did he make glad? Whom did he honor? The combined powers of earth, the churches fallen by rejecting light and the messages of mercy Heaven had sent to heal Babylon but she refused. (Christ had declared the friendship of the world was enmity with God. Whosoever would be a friend of the world was the enemy of God.) The papal power, the man of sin which thought to change times and laws, that had presented a rival sabbath to the world to be worshiped, the apostate power who sits in the temple of God showing himself that he is God, the power that drank the blood of the saints is united with the Protestant churches, having two horns like a lamb but speaks as a dragon; the deceptions of spiritualism which have perpetuated Satan’s lie uttered in Eden, “Thou shalt not surely die”—all these are bound up in bundles, a corrupt harmony under a corrupt leader. The blessing is pronounced by this false christ upon the worshipers of the beast and his image, [the people] who have received the mark of the beast and the mark of the image of the beast.Ms16-1884 1.1600
Here is the only hope of God’s people—the unerring word of Jehovah that there would be a remnant only in this trying time who would keep the word of Christ’s patience, who would not worship the beast, papal Rome, or his image (Protestants who are represented by the image beast with lamb-like pretensions but speaks as a dragon). “If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: and the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.” Revelation 14:9-11.Ms16-1884 1.1600
Appearances will deceive. The masterly miracle-working power of Satan has carried the whole world with them and the fallen churches, and those only who have [made] the Bible their study, who have the law of God engraven in their hearts, will stand the test of this time of satanic delusion and peril. If it were possible, Jesus tells us, they would deceive the very elect. Satan in personating Jesus Christ is worshiped as God. Angels of God are waiting the mandate from the divine Advocate which shall place man above the wrath of Satan. The Lord of heaven and of earth sorrows and rejoices over His repenting, believing children. Their steadfast [adherence to] principle was attended by loss, sacrifice, and peril. Their adherence to the commandments of God provoked calumny and [the] hatred of the disloyal and apostate churches. Whatsoever is not sustained by the Bible standard must not be entertained. Those who are the agents of Satan are vindictive, cruel, and like their master. Those who make the Bible their standard must expect abuse, outrage. In the cause of truth there can be no compromise.Ms16-1884 1.1600Jesus is looking from His throne upon His people. His interest is identified with His suffering brethren. With joy the angel hears the word from Jesus, “Take away the filthy garments from him and clothe him with change of raiment.” And He said, “Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.” Satan sees that he is about to lose his last chance of subverting these souls and he brings all the powers of his satanic generalship into intense activity. This last great act in the drama is in personating Jesus Christ. His disguise is discerned by none but those who are established in the Scriptures and acquainted [with] the word of God. The saints look on with amazement. Will they also be deceived? Will they worship Satan? Angels of God are about them. A clear, firm, musical voice is heard, “Look up.” There was one object before the praying ones—[the] final and eternal salvation of their souls. This object was before them constantly—that immortal life was promised to them who endure unto the end. Oh, how earnest and fervent had been their desires. The judgment and eternity were in view. Their eyes by faith were fixed on the blazing throne, before which the white-robed ones were to stand. This restrained them from the indulgence of sin. They were ripening for heaven. They had been cultivating spiritual mindedness, and striving soul, might, mind, and strength with persevering energy to copy the Pattern, that they might be without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, and meet their Lord in peace. Their souls went out in all the intense longing for to see Jesus, and by beholding by faith the character and purity of Jesus they were being transformed into His image. They were being brought into close harmony with Jesus Christ, and they had indomitable purpose. They would not dishonor God; they would not receive the mark of the beast or of his image; they would overcome as servants and sons of God, that they might inherit all things.Ms16-1884 1.1600
As a child lost weeps and longs for home, so did the remnant long to see Him whom their souls loveth, their Deliverer, Him in whom their hope of eternal life was centered. Pilgrims and strangers amidst labors, sorrows and conflicts, they turn the eye of faith heavenward, exclaiming, “Come, Lord Jesus, and come quickly.” Home—the mansions Christ has gone to prepare for them; how they long for their home in glory, how they long to enter within the gates of the city and dwell in the presence of Jesus forever. Their desires have been cherished long, and as Satan and his angels inspired the world, the church, and state against them, their souls with intense longings have cherished the soul-inspiring hope of overcoming and wearing the crown of life. Their character had obtained the heavenly mold that gave them discernment to see thedisguises of Satan. Their understanding of Scriptures had given them a fixedness of purpose, an indomitable energy, which rendered them impossible to be molded or subdued by earth or hell. They count all things loss for the excellency of Christ. They could not be bribed or seduced or terrified. They were deaf to the siren song of pleasure, blind to the dazzling splendors presented before them to confuse, to allure, their senses. Worldly distractions, ambitions, honors were presented before them but only to be rejected. Indifferent to the threats and unmoved by terrors of the infernal powers, they could not be overthrown by Satan’s devices.Ms16-1884 1.1600
One effort more, and then Satan’s last device is employed. He hears the unceasing cry for Christ to come, for Christ to deliver them. This last strategy is to personate Christ and make them think their prayers are answered. But this answers to the last closing work, the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place. This article captures God's witnesses and the efforts of Satan when he appears as Christ to deceive them. Such wonderful descriptions capture the response of God's witnesses to Satan's final attempt at deception :
"They would not dishonor God; they would not receive the mark of the beast or of his image; they would overcome as servants and sons of God, that they might inherit all things.."
"Their character had obtained the heavenly mold that gave them discernment to see the disguises of Satan. Their understanding of Scriptures had given them a fixedness of purpose, an indomitable energy, which rendered them impossible to be molded or subdued by earth or hell."
Christ truly has a people on earth at this time who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12). It is interesting to note the timing of these events revealed in the article :

At this time when Satan is personating Christ the angels of God await the declaration from heaven that God's witnesses have passed the test and they can finally rescue them from the machinations of Satan and his evil hordes. They are still witnessing in sackcloth, but it isn't long now!
"Jesus is looking from His throne upon His people. His interest is identified with His suffering brethren. "The work of Satan as an accuser began in heaven. This has been his work on earth ever since man’s fall, and it will be his work in a special sense as we approach nearer to the close of this world’s history. As he sees that his time is short, he will work with greater earnestness to deceive and destroy. He is angry when he sees a people on the earth who, even in their weakness and sinfulness, have respect to the law of Jehovah. He is determined that they shall not obey God. He delights in their unworthiness, and has devices prepared for every soul, that all may be ensnared and separated from God. He seeks to accuse and condemn God and all who strive to carry out His purposes in this world in mercy and love, in compassion and forgiveness." COL 167.1
"Notwithstanding the defects of the people of God, Christ does not turn away from the objects of His care. He has the power to change their raiment. He removes the filthy garments, He places upon the repenting, believing ones His own robe of righteousness, and writes pardon against their names on the records of heaven. He confesses them as His before the heavenly universe. Satan their adversary is shown to be an accuser and deceiver. God will do justice for His own elect." COL 169.3
"But the day is near when “God is judge Himself.” (Psalm 50:6). Then the decisions of earth shall be reversed. “The rebuke of His people shall He take away.” Isaiah 25:8. White robes will be given to every one of them. (Revelation 6:11.) And “they shall call them the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord.” Isaiah 62:12. "COL179.3
*[[Rev 22:11]] KJV* He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
The declaration is made that God's witnesses are righteous and holy. The white robe of the righteousness of Christ has been given to them and those that succumbed to the worship of the beast and his image have been declared filthy. Probation has closed on humanity. The eternal welfare of every human that has ever lived on earth has been decided.

This paragraph confirms that Satan's actions are part of the last closing work. The reference is also made to Satan's personation of Christ being the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place. This is a direct reference to:
*[[Mat 24:15]] KJV* When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation,spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
The logical thing to do would be to determine where in Daniel does the abomination of desolation stand in the holy place? Another related question would be : What is the holy place?
*[[Psa 24:3]] KJV* Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place?
*[[Dan 9:16]] KJV* O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
The word of God is quite clear as to what is considered the holy place - it is the city Jerusalem and Daniel himself refers to it as 'thy holy mountain'.
*[[Eze 43:12]] KJV* This is the law of the house; Upon the top of the mountain the whole limit thereof round about shall be most holy. Behold, this is the law of the house. This verse from Ezekiel's vision of the temple (God's pattern - verse 10) is additional evidence of what God considers his holy place.
Now we have determined what God's holy place is we now know what will be the sign for us to flee according to Matthew 24:
*[[Mat 24:15]] KJV* When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
*[[Mat 24:16]] KJV* Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
*[[Mat 24:17]] KJV* Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
*[[Mat 24:18]] KJV* Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
*[[Mat 24:19]] KJV* And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
*[[Mat 24:20]] KJV* But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
*[[Mat 24:21]] KJV* For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Praise God for His clear instructions from His word and the truth He has imparted to us from his servant Ellen White. It is amazing when you see how scripture and the testimony of Ellen White are consistent because they are both inspired by our heavenly father. Can you see the flow of events in Matthew 24 related to the abomination of desolation (Satan) standing in the holy place?
To determine the timing of Satan's standing up as the abomination of desolation in the holy place we need to examine what is happening prior to Satan standing up.
*[[Mat 24:14]] KJV* And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all theworld for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
According to verse 14 it is when the gospel has been preached in all the world for a witness or testimony that then the end shall come. This same event is captured in :
*[[Rev 11:7]] KJV* And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
In prophecy, AT THE END of the witnesses testimony note who makes war against God's witnesses - the beast from the bottomless pit. In Matthew 24 we have immediately after verse 14 when the witness has gone to all nations the warning to flee from the abomination of desolation in verse 15. Satan is described as the beast from the bottomless pit in Revelation 11 and in Matthew 24 he is the abomination of desolation. The beast from the bottomless pit is also described in Revelation 17 (Revelation 17:8). A beast is an earthly government or political power. The beast from the bottomless pit is so under the control of Satan it arises from the bottomless pit symbolising the intimate relationship it has with the King of demons. Revelation 9 confirms the identity of the King from the bottomless pit :
*[[Rev 9:11]] KJV* And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
Satan is the king of the bottomless pit and the beast which ascends from the pit is one he has full control over. The meanings for the two descriptive words used in the verse leave no doubt as to who this king of the bottomless pit is:
Abaddon : Strong's Definition: Of Hebrew origin [H11]; a destroying angel: - Abaddon.
Apollyon: Strong's Definition: Active participle of G622; a destroyer (that is, Satan): - Apollyon.
Satan as his crowning act of deception personates Christ. This according to Ellen White "answers to the abomination of desolation". We are warned to flee from the abomination of desolation in Matthew 24:15 by Christ himself. We are instructed to flee when we see Satan (antichrist) stand in the holy place (Jerusalem). Satan is the author of destruction and desolation is his forte. Satan declares war on God's witnesses when their testimony has ended (Revelation 11:7) and the desolation he instigates includes a death decree for those individuals who dare to insult him and worship on the seventh day sabbath which he has declared has been changed.
Satan has always wanted the worship of humanity. He has claimed this world as his own:
Mighty issues for the world were at stake in the conflict between the Prince of light and the leader of the kingdom of darkness. After tempting man to sin, Satan claimed the earth as his, and styled himself the prince of this world. Having conformed to his own nature the father and mother of our race, he thought to establish here his empire. He declared that men had chosen him as their sovereign.
Through his control of men, he held dominion over the world. DA 114.3
Satan knows his efforts are futile because his doom was sealed at the cross when Christ's sinless sacrifice refuted his accusations against God:
But the work of human redemption is not all that is accomplished by the cross. The love of God is manifested to the universe. The prince of this world is cast out. The accusations which Satan has brought against God are refuted. The reproach which he has cast upon heaven is forever removed. Angels as well as men are drawn to the Redeemer. “I, if I be lifted up from the earth,” He said, “will draw all unto Me.” DA 626.1
Satan's desire to supercede the Creator God of the universe who even created himself is captured in Ezekiel 28:2:
*[[Eze 28:2]] KJV* Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:
The first sinner was one whom God had greatly exalted. He is represented under the figure of the prince of Tyrus flourishing in might and magnificence. Little by little Satan came to indulge the desire for self-exaltation. The Scripture says: “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty; thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness.” “Thou hast said in thine heart ... I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.... I will be like the Most High” [Isaiah 14:13, 14].
When will the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION(Satan) sit in the SEAT OF GOD in the MIDST OF THE SEAS?
*[[Dan 11:45]] KJV* And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
The King of the North in Daniel 11 just before the close of probation when Michael stands up in Daniel 12:1 plants his tabernacles in THE GLORIOUS HOLY MOUNTAIN. That King of the North who enters into the glorious land, overthrowing many and gaining control of the silver, gold and precious things, in addition to seeking to destroy God's people by going forth with much fury to take away many is none other than the King of Babylon - SATAN in consort with the composite beast which arises from the sea in Revelation 13:1 : *[[Rev 13:1]] KJV* And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. The final fulfillment of Revelation 13 begins with the ten horns on the beast arising with ten crowns. In Revelation 17 the same beast is pictured but the crowns are not present on the heads: *[[Rev 17:3]] KJV* So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. Revelation 17 reveals the beast prior to the final fulfillment of Revelation 13. A definite prediction is made of the future of this beast in Revelation 17: *[[Rev 17:12]] KJV* And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.*[[Rev 17:13]] KJV* These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. In Revelaton 17 the beast's horns were yet to receive their crowns, but in Revelation 13 they have received them signifying the ten king's willingness to give their power and strength to the beast. *[[Rev 13:4]] KJV* And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? The beast of Revelation 13 is totally under the dominion of the dragon which gives him his power. Both are recipients of worship. It is this dragon/beast combination which is pictured as the King of the North in the final verses of Daniel 11. The expression : 'Who is able to make war with him?' (Revelation 13:4) captures the mighty military prowess of this power combination : *[[Dan 11:40]] KJV* And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. Like a WHIRLWIND!
*[[Rev 17:3]] KJV* So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. The final King of the North in Daniel 11 is the scarlet coloured beast with the ten horns under the powerful influence of the whore who sits on her - Babylon - that deadly combination of apostate protestantism, spiritualism and the papacy. Satan is taking the false spiritual system for a ride in the direction he wishes to go. He is in reality in full control of all earthly churches and governments except for those who remain true to the true Creator God of the universe (Revelation 14 :12).
It is important to note what Ellen White documents about Ezekiel 28, which records Satan's desire to sit in the seat of God in the midst of the seas:
I ask our people to study the Ezekiel 28:1. The representation here made, while it refers primarily to Lucifer, the fallen angel, has a yet broader significance. Not one being, but a general movement, is described, and one that we shall witness. A faithful study of this chapter should lead those who are seeking for truth to walk in all the light that God has given to His people, lest they be deceived by the deceptions of these last days. SpTB17a
Satan is King of Babylon and Babylon is that movement described by Ellen White thus:
“The churches, represented by Babylon, are represented as having fallen from their spiritual state to become a persecuting power against those who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. To John this persecuting power is represented as having horns like a lamb, but as speaking like a dragon." {18MR 29.1}
Babylon is so under the control of Satan that the lamb speaking like a dragon is akin to a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The beast that once arose from the earth as the United States of America is now totally under the control of the King of Babylon. Just like pagan Rome was once described as the red dragon in Revelation 12: 7 when about to devour the woman’s child as soon as it was born. However this dragon is in disguise - he claims to be God and even looks like Christ as described in Revelation 1:12 -15
“In Revelation we read concerning Satan: "And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name" (Revelation 13:13-17). . . . {3SM 393.1}”
It is the lying wonders of the devil that will take the world captive, and he will cause fire to come down from heaven in the sight of men. He is to work miracles, and this wonderful, miracle-working power is to sweep in the whole world.--2SM 51 (1890). {LDE 167.3}
Satan will come in to deceive if possible the very elect. He claims to be Christ, and he is coming in, pretending to be the great medical missionary. He will cause fire to come down from heaven in the sight of men to prove that he is God.--MM 87, 88 (1903). {LDE 167.4}
This confederacy of satanic forces will make void the law of God and give its allegiance to Satan in his deceptive attire as an angel of light. Satan's personation of Christ will take place and as King of Babylon he will be welcomed and lauded as Babylon's Lord and Saviour. His desire is described aptly : *[[Isa 14:13]] KJV* For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:*[[Isa 14:14]] KJV* I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Nebuchadnezzar the King of Babylon was a King from the North (Ezekiel 26:7) and Satan the King of mystic Babylon is the antitype yet to appear as Christ claiming the worship and adoration of humanity and stamp his image of approval on his kingdom.
The so-called Christian world is to be the theater of great and decisive actions. Men in authority will enact laws controlling the conscience, after the example of the papacy. Babylon will make all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. Every nation will be involved. Of this time John the Revelator declares: [Revelation 18:3-7; 17:13, 14, quoted]. “These have one mind.” There will be a universal bond of union, one great harmony, a confederacy of Satan’s forces. “And shall give their power and strength unto the beast.” Thus is manifested the same arbitrary, oppressive power against religious liberty—freedom to worship God according to the dictates of conscience—as was manifested by the papacy, when in the past it persecuted those who dared to refuse to conform with the religious rites and ceremonies of Romanism.—Selected Messages 3:392 (1891). Satan's appearing as Christ "answers to the abomination of desolation". When Satan plants his tabernacles or stands in the holy place this is the warning for God's commandment keeping people to flee to the mountains. His evil angels prepare the way for his coming. This occurs during the sounding of the fifth trumpet when they are released from the bottomless pit. Satan appears after they have prepared the way. It is his crowning act to deceive if possible the very elect just before the close of probation and place his seal of approval on Babylon and "plant the tabernacles of his palace" (Daniel 11:45) sitting in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas (Ezekiel 28; 2)
